YOUTH RACE TEAMS

Youth Race Teams

SSP is proud to offer a variety of year-round youth racing opportunities!

Thank you for your interest in racing at Sail Sand Point! We are pleased to offer a number of youth racing programs year-round for a wide range of ages. This page serves as a guide to our racing programs over our different seasons of operation. For more detail on each team, visit their sub-pages below or read this page for further details.

This guide serves to explain our team structure and outline the differences between the various subgroups within our teams. New sailors and parents should seek a recommendation from a sailor or instructor regarding which group to join. Coaches may move a sailor to a different team or practice day if the sailor’s skill level does not match the goals of the group. Current sailors may switch between groups and classes during the season with coach permission.

Sail Sand Point race team dues are all-inclusive. Sailors are provided use of SSP boats for practice and regattas throughout the season. Dues included regatta coaching fees and boat maintenance. Dues are kept low and scholarships are available for any sailor. To apply for a scholarship, complete our Youth Racing Scholarship Application and return it to the office by email (alec@sailsandpoint.org), mail or in person.

Summer Race Teams

Sail Sand Point offers a number of different race teams during the summer season. These groups are divided by skill/commitment level and boat type. There are two general categories: Travel and Development. Travel teams are aimed at sailors with more experience who are interested in competing in the summer NWYRC regatta series (and beyond). These sailors are willing to travel to events and want to learn to race at a high level. Development teams are intended for sailors who are coming into the racing scene, from our summer camp programs or elsewhere. These teams focus on skill-building and offer some (but not as many) competitive opportunities. To view information about the summer development teams, click here. For information about the travel team, click here.

High School Sailing (Spring and Fall)

During the Spring and Fall, SSP hosts a number of high school sailing teams from around our local community. This program provides coaching and support at regattas as high schoolers come together to practice, hone their sailing skills, and represent their schools in our high school sailing district (NWISA). This program is open to a wide range of skill levels and offers high school students a more independent experience of team-building and competition than they would find in a summer sailing program. Sand Point Opti Team (Spring and Fall)

The Sand Point Opti Team, or S.P.O.T, is SSP’s year-round Opti racing program and targets our youngest racers. SPOT sailors are interested in learning more about racing and want to sail competitively in Opti regattas over the summer (SPOT does continue through the summer – see Summer Race Team page). Race Team Dues

Sail Sand Point utilizes a tiered dues structure for our youth racing programs and offers scholarships to any youth racing participants in need.

Families can choose between paying market rate or a more supportive rate; can request a subsidized rate; or apply for a scholarship.

All race team dues payments will be managed through Active Network.

Families are not beholden to pay at the same tier over multiple seasons. The tier a family chooses will have no impact on their sailor’s standing in the program.

Please refer to the Race Team Dues page to choose what is best for your family.
